Business has its ups and downs. What past experiences keep you going - and why?

One of the things that keeps me going is a short letter to a newspaper I read many years ago and clipped out. It was very short and simple but it basically said that this town needed a design firm that wasn't all about their ego and focused on customer service and helping the customers businesses.

I will admit that the best looking design isn't always the best design for a certain application or an effective design. I have even had a business owner ask me why their mailer could win an addy award (created by one of the big firms in town) but get absultely no response when mailed out to their clients and potential clients. I asked them if they thought it grabbed people's attention enough from the stack of junk mail we get each day - the judges for an addy had to spend time looking at a piece and reviewing it, your mail recipient might take a split second to decide if your piece is worth their attention or will go into the trash.

So, what's your business story that brings a smile to your face and keeps you going through the tough times?

The simple "thank you"s I sometimes get.

The "wow"ed expressions I have seen on people's faces when I show them their final piece or the rare instance when I will do some work in front of someone.

Their amazement at how quickly I can put something together, change a color of something that looks complex.

I remember one client who would e-mail me almost weekly the more impressive stories about the orders they had received or sometimes just how many they had received because of the website I had built. (they have since sold their business)

The good clients who don't expect me to read their mind and are willing to work with me instead of insisting that I just do something only to tell me that the result was nothing like what they had in mind and leaving ticked off to find another designer. (I actually seem to get quite a few people who won't answer my questions and seem to think I can read their minds also.)

It simply comes down to a sense of appreciation that keeps me going.
