Jan 01, 2004 3:34 pm What's a realistic goal?
Eric Sohn

My thread with Althea brings up an interesting distinction I want to draw for everyone:

What do we mean by realistic goals?

It goes beyond the concept of "it's not impossible." A realistic goal has to, in my opinion, fulfill 2 requirements:

  • There must be room for imperfection. Setting a goal that has absolutes like every, never, or always sets you up to fail, not succeed. The first time you don't achieve perfection, you may give up because you can no longer achieve your goal.
  • There must be a tangible possibility of failing to achieve the goal. Basically, you will never know what you achieve if you don't take the risk of overreaching. For example, if you know that you can increase your cold calls by 1 extra call a day, there is a good chance you won't try to make the 2nd, 3rd of 4th extra call.

Can anyone share examples of goals you've set that didn't meet these criteria?

Coach Eric

Oh, and...Happy New Year!
